Expert Software Games on XP -------------------------------------------- Certain games published by Expert Software (including Perfect Chessmate and some of the Bicycle Card Game Products) will not install on Windows XP. This is a problem with the setup program (and not the game itselft). The following instructions will allow you to install Perfect Chessmate on a WindowsXP machine and can also be adapted for other Expert Software games that have the same problem. 1. Insert the Perfect Chessmate CD into your CD drive. 2. Allow the autoplay to run up until the point where you get the "DirectX 5 needs Windows 95 error". 3. Use Windows Explorer or My Computer to browse your CD drive. 4. Open the \Chess folder and right-click Setup.exe. 5. Select Properties from the pop-up menu. 6. Click the Compatibilities tab. 7. Click "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 95" 8. Click OK. 9. Double-click Setup.exe to run the installation wizard. 10. Continue through the installation as normal, but do NOT install DirectX when you are asked to. 11. Finish the installation, but do not launch Perfect Chessmate at the end. At this point the program is installed on your computer, but the shortcut on the programs menu may not be correct. Some users reported not having to do the following steps. However, just to be safe you should at least review them and see if your shortcut information is correct. 1. Click the start menu and browse the Expert Software\Perfect Chessmate folder as if you were going to run the program. 2. Instead of running the program, right-click the Perfect Chessmate icon. 3. Select Properties from the pop-up menu. 4. Change the Target box to reflect where the program was installed and then add "\Chess\Chess.exe" to the end. For example, if you chose the default install directory this would be "C:\Program Files\Expert Software\PerfectChessmate\Chess\Chess.exe". 5. Click OK. You should now be able to run Perfect Chessmate from the start menu.
